General Foot Care

Your feet, like other specialized structures, require specialized care. Dr. Shepherd, as a doctor of podiatric medicine, can contribute to your total health, whether it’s regular preventive care or surgical care. Self-treatment can often turn a minor problem into a major which is why it’s advisable to see a podiatric physician when any conditions occur or persist.

Diabetic Foot Care

As a diabetic you are more prone to foot problems so it’s important to keep your feet healthy. If you have cuts or breaks in the skin, an ingrown nail, corns or calluses it is best to come in and see the doctor. It’s also advisable to come in if your foot changes color, shape, or just feels different (for example, becomes less sensitive or hurts). Seeing a podiatrist on a regular basis ensures that you maintain optimal foot health.

Wound Care

If you experience abrasions, lacerations, rupture, puncture or penetrating wounds to your feet, please make an appointment as soon as possible. Although it is possible to treat more superficial wounds at home, if you experience excessive bleeding, evidence of infection including redness, swelling, increased pain, and pus at the wound or if there is concern that wound needs repair with stitches please contact our office and make an appointment right away.

Arch and heel pain is most often caused by stress or injury to the The plantar fascia which is a broad band of fibrous tissue located along the bottom surface of the foot that runs from the heel to the forefoot. Bunions & Hammer Toes

Bunions form when your big toe pushes up against your other toes, forcing your big toe joint in the opposite direction, away from the normal profile of your foot. Over time, the abnormal position enlarges your big toe joint, crowding your other toes and causing pain. Hammer toes are cause by the same risk factors as bunions but mostly occur on toes next to the large toe.
